Health problems such as diarrhea, intestinal problems, hepatitis and cholera are in many cases the direct result of the fecal contamination of the water. In our region, the majority of the wells are located in the arroyos (dry river bed) and the animal excrements contaminates the wells.

Often the letrines and corrals are located at less than 20 meters from the wells which causes the bacteria and viruses in the human and animal excrement to reach the water in the wells. Inside the household, the inadecuate handling of water auments the bacterial contamination of the water used by the rural families.
