PROJECT
SUMMARY

The UVeta project started in 2004-2005, when Niparajá AC and the National Water Commission conducted a water quality study in 500 wells of the state of Baja California Sur , Mexico. It was determined that 42% of the wells have fecal contamination dring the dry season and close to 100% during the rainy season.

With the inspiration of the UV Tube and AquatUVo developped at UC Berkeley, Niparajá and the La Paz Technological Institute (Oscar Rodriguez) invented a new household water disinfection system, compact and low cost, called the UV Bucket.

The UV Bucket won a World Bank Award in the “Development Marketplace 2006” competition and the funding received allows us to currently fabricate and distribute 6000 UV Buckets for at least 75% of the rural population of BCS.

The first 500 UV Bucket campaign was conducted during 2007 and the monitoring and evaluation of the UV Buckets in the field allowed us to make a number of improvements to the design. The new version will be called UVeta and 2000 units are being fabricated in Tijuana, Mexico.
