Welcome
Who Was
Niparajá?
The Pericú people, original inhabitants of these lands,
spoke of a man named Niparajá who lived in the heavens, created the land
and the sea, provided the food, planted the trees and everything we see,
and was free to do as he wished. He can’t be seen, for he doesn’t have
a body like ours…
P. Miguel Venegas
(Noticia de California y su conquista temporal y
espiritual hasta el tiempo presente)
Spanish Jesuit Miguel Venegas (1680-1764) was one of the earlier
historians of the Baja California Peninsula. In his “News from
California”, published in Mexico in 1757, father Venegas wrote about the
geography, flora, fauna, and indigenous groups that inhabited the
peninsula. He also wrote about the history of the region, from the first
discoveries by the Spanish until 1739.
