Water Management

Niparajá´s water program focuses on gathering scientific data on the quality and quantity of Baja California Sur´s sources of water with the aim of implementing action plans to protect community and ecosystem health.

Current Projects

Since September 2004, Niparaja´s water program consist of:

  1. Baja "500": Analyze the water quality (bacteria, heavy metals, salinity) of 500 wells in Baja California Sur.

  2. Filters: Develop filters to provide safe drinking water to rural communities:

  • Iron filters to remove arsenic in contaminated communities.

  • UV tubes to eliminate bacteria.

  • Solar distillators.

Future Work

Niparaja´s future work on water includes:

  1. Rural schools: Develop a water quality test kit and a manual for rural schools to enable teachers and school children to monitor their community wells.

  2. Mining sites: Study the impact of mine contamination on populations and ecosystems: San Antonio, San Juan de la Costa, and Santa Rosalia. Propose a phytoremediation plan using ferns to clean the contaminated environment.

  3. Loreto aquifer: Conduct a geophysical and geochemical study of the Loreto aquifer to determine the quantity and quality of water and assess seawater intrusion.

  4. Micro-watersheds: Launch a pilot study on microwatershed management in isolated ranchs to make use of stormwater.
