UV Bucket
In 2004-2005 Niparajá A.C., in partnership with the National Water Commission of Mexico (CNA), conducted a study of the water quality in 500 wells of BCS. Of the 500 wells, we tested the bacterial levels in 102 wells. We determined that 42% of the wells have fecal contamination during the dry season, and 100% during the rainy season. The fecal contamination propagates waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, hepatitis and cholera, among others and contributes to a rate of infant mortality 4 times higher than in the neighboring USA.
In 2005-2006, Niparajá and the Technological Institute of La Paz worked on the design of a water disinfection device using ultraviolet light, called UV Bucket.
This technology won, on the 9th of May 2006, an award at the World Bank, "Development Marketplace 2006", which rewards “Innovations on water, sanitation and energy services for poor people”. This award will enable us to fabricate and distribute 6000 UV Buckets with the goal of reaching a minimum of 75% of the rural population in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico, within the next two years.
