Updates

The distribution started on January 9th, 2007 in a low-income neighborhood outside of the city of La Paz, called Colonia Marquez de Leon. The event took place with representatives of SEDESOL, the Ministry of Social Affairs that co-financed the fabrication of the first 500 UV Buckets.

Strategy

As asked by Miguel Jordan, coordinator of Social Programs for SEDESOL, and agreed by Niparaja and Ricardo Hernandez, World Bank Mexico, the first 500 UV Buckets will be given for free to the high and very high marginality communities of Baja California Sur. However, since the first 500 UV Buckets function with 110V electric power, it was agreed that 110V communities of high marginality would be served first and the rest of the high marginality areas who have access to 12VDC power only would be served by the next campaign 2000 UV Buckets which will function with 12V.

Methodology

The following methodology was used to present the project in B.C.S:

·  The UV bucket project is first presented to the rural mayors gathered by municipality.

·  The mayors go back to their communities with the task of conducting a census of the families, as well to present the UV Bucket to the members of the community to determine the number of interested families.

·  During a second event with the rural mayors, Niparajá collects the data for every community and proposes a date for visiting the community.

  • 9:30-11:00: Discussion on water and health with the community. What are the common diseases in the communities? What is the water situation in their community? Short class on water and its contaminants and the types of waterborne diseases. Discussion on other problems in the communities and other potential technologies to solve them.

  • 11:00-12:00: Demonstration of the technology and mode of use of the UV Bucket at the school and question & answer session.

  • 12:00-13:00: Visit of three households in the communities to take samples of the water used for drinking: measurement of pH, temperature and salinity (TDS) and preparation of bacteria culture using the Easygel kit.
